LIMS/ELN: Reaching the Promise Land - Lean Lab Operations and the integrated Quality System
Tuesday 3/13/2012 8:30am -
12:30pm Course #89
Lean techniques have been used for many years within manufacturing to improve quality (Right First Time), improve productivity and reduce cycle time. Although QC Labs are not the same as manufacturing environments (most notably Labs typically have more volatile workloads) Lean techniques can be, and have been, applied to the Lab to realize benefits similar to those achieved within manufacturing.
Incorporating Lab Informatics (LIMS, CDS, ELN, SDMS, etc.) into the Lab can further improve quality and productivity, reduce cycle time, minimize the use of paper and, of paramount importance to regulated industries, enforce compliance with standard operating procedures. Lab Informatics solutions have been implemented within the lab with varying degrees of success for many years now. Not all LIMS implementations have been successful and typically the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of such systems has been underestimated. Lab Informatics solutions continue to expand and the boundaries between them are becoming fuzzy. Deployment model options (Global, Regional, and Local, Private and Public clouds) too are expanding. Selecting the right Informatics Solutions and associated deployment model are critical to the success of any Lab Automation project.
The first part of this course will introduce Lean concepts that have been proven to work in the Lab environment. The second part of this course will introduce the key components of the Lab Informatics Architecture and detail a process to navigate through the maze of options and deployment models to select the right course of action for your Lab.
The course is targeted for QC laboratory managers, chemists and technicians from all industries but will also be of interest to IT personnel and QA managers.
